The Science of Emotions and Relationships | Huberman Lab Podcast #13

In this episode, I discuss the biology of emotions and moods in the context of relationships. I focus on the science of how early child-caregiver attachment, together with adolescence and puberty, shapes our adult patterns of attachment. I explain three universal aspects of emotion, the reality of right-brain versus left-brain personality, and how the roots of adult attachment are also based on specific aspects of puberty. I review what factors determine when puberty begins and ends, and the role of oxytocin and other chemicals in controlling how we see and remember others. As always, I mention a variety of practical tools, including new tools for understanding and predicting our emotions, and the neurochemicals that shape human connections. #HubermanLab #Emotions #Neuroscience Thanks to our sponsors: Insidetracker – https://insidetracker.com/huberman ExpressVPN – http://expressvpn.com/huberman Magic Spoon – http://magicspoon.com/huberman Our Patreon page: Thorn From https://www.patreon.com/andrewhuberman Supplements: http://www.thorne.com/u/huberman Link: NSDR – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pL02HRFk2vo Mood Meter App – https://moodmeterapp.com/ Adolescence and the brain – https://www.nature.com/articles/nature25770 Vagus and depression – https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2015/05/18/lighting – The-Brain Social: Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/hubermanlab Twitter – https://twitter.com/hubermanlab Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/hubermanlab Website – https://hubermanlab . com Join neural network – https://hubermanlab.com/neural-network timestamp below. 00:00:00 Introduction 00:05:10 New cost-free resources announced: Caption, NSDR link 00:07:40 Emotions: Subjective yet accessible 00:10:53 To understand your feelings: to infancy and youth View 00:15 :21 Your first emotion was anxiety 00:17:36 What are “healthy feelings”? 00:19:03 Digital Tool to Predict Your Emotions: Mood Meter App 00:21:08 The Architecture of an Emotion: (At Least) 3 Important Questions to Ask Yourself 00:24:00 Are You an Infant : Bonds and Predictions 00 :27:57 Attachment Style Depends on How You Handle Frustration 00:32:40 The “glue points” of emotional bonds: gaze, voice, affect, touch, (and written) 00 :36:34 “Emotional Health”: Awareness of the Interoceptive-Exteroceptive Dynamic 00:37:50 An Exercise: Controlling the Interoceptive-Exteroceptive Bias 00:42:19 Getting Out of Your Head: Attentional Aperture 00:46:59 Puberty: Biology and Emotions on Intentional Overdrive 00:47:58 Bodyfat and Puberty: The Leptin Connection 00:50:34 Pheromones: Mating, Timing Puberty, Spontaneous Miscarriage 00:54:37 Kisspeptin: Strong Trigger of Puberty and Performance Enhancer 00 :58:26 The Neuroplasticity of Emotions: Becoming an Expert and Testing Emotional Bonds 01:00:25 Test Driving Brain Circuits for Emotion: Spread 01:07:48 Science-Based Recommendations f or Adolescents and Adolescents: Autonomy Buffet 01:11:05 “Right-Brain vs. Left-Brain People”: Facts vs. Lies 01:14:18 Left Brain = Language, Right Brain = Spatial Awareness 01:16:15 How to Recognize “Right Brain Activity” in Speech “:prosody 01:18:32 Oxytocin: Molecule of Synchronizing States 01:20:09 Mirror Neurons: Not for “Empathy”, Maybe for Predicting Behavior 01:23:00 Promoting Trust and Monogamy 01:27 :00 Ways to Increase Oxytocin 01:28:34 Vasopressin: Aphrodisiac, Non-monogamous and Bed-Wetting Properties 01:30:43 Relationship Body, Not Just the Mind: Vagus Nerve, Depression Relief Through the Body 01:35 :18 A Powerful Tool to Increase the Range and Depth of Emotional Experience 01:30:43 MDMA and Other Psychedelic Compounds: Building a Framework 01:38:54 Roundup, Different Forms of Support Please note that the Huberman Lab podcast by Dr. Huberman’s teaching and research roles at Stanford University School of Medicine.
